Don Willis
My name is Don Willis, and I am asking for your support as I seek to serve as your next Macon County Commissioner for District I. For more than 35 years, I’ve dedicated my life to serving the people of Macon County. My commitment to public service began in 1988 as a volunteer with Franklin Fire & Rescue. In 1994, I became the Macon County Fire Marshal, and in 1998, I was honored to be hired by Sheriff Homer Holbrooks to join the Macon County Sheriff’s Office. I proudly served there until my retirement in May 2021 as a Lieutenant over the Criminal Investigations Unit. Today, I continue to serve part-time with the Sheriff’s Department in Support Services because my dedication to this community has never stopped. Macon County is more than simply a place to live – it’s home. It’s shaped who I am and how I serve. My wife Robin and I have been married for 45 years.

She currently works for Edward Jones Financial, and together we’ve raised two wonderful children, Amber and Justin, who have blessed us with four grandchildren, all of whom are growing up right here in Macon County. Our greatest joy is spending time with family, whether we’re at the lake, hunting, or cheering on our grandkids at their ballgames. Throughout my life, I’ve seen firsthand what makes our County strong. Our people, our values, and our willingness to work together. As County Commissioner, I will bring that same dedication, integrity, and hands-on leadership that guided my decades in public service. I am running for County Commissioner to ensure Macon County remains a safe, thriving, and family-centered place for generations to come.

It would be my honor and privilege to continue service to Macon County by being trusted to be elected your Macon County Commissioner for District I to build on Macon County’s legacy and to protect and grow the future we all share.

Joey Wilson
Joey Wilson
My name is Joey Wilson, and I’m running for County Commissioner because I care deeply about the future of Macon County and the people who call it home.

I was born and raised right here in Macon County, and this community shaped who I am. In 2004, I started my own small construction business as a local contractor. Being a small business owner taught me the value of hard work, fiscal responsibility, and the importance of cutting through red tape to get things done.

In 2011, I went to work for Duke Energy, where I continue to focus on reliability, safety, and long-term planning—skills that I believe are essential for effective and responsible county leadership.

I’m 46 years old, married, and my wife and I are raising our two children, ages 15 and 17, right here in Macon County. Like many families, we care about strong schools, dependable infrastructure, public safety, and making sure our tax dollars are used wisely.

I’m running for County Commissioner to bring practical experience, common-sense leadership, and a commitment to working together to keep Macon County strong—today and for the next generation.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me. I would be honored to earn your support.

County Commissioners District 2

Kellie M Burns
Kellie M Burns

I am Kellie Burns and I am running to be your next District 2 County Commissioner.

I am a lifelong resident of Macon County—born and raised. My lineage spans back generations, which means my roots run deep, and my love and commitment for this county is unsurpassed.

I have been married to the love of my life, Chris Burns, for the past 30 years. Chris recently retired from UPS after 37 years of dedicated service. He is, without a doubt, the greatest man, husband, father and friend you will ever meet. We have been blessed with three children and two beautiful granddaughters. Our family is everything to us and it is one of the main reasons that I am running to be your next commissioner. I want to make sure that we lay a foundation for a better tomorrow.

Growing up, my dad instilled a love for the great outdoors in me so I spend most of my time hiking, camping and working outside on our farm. I preserve and can my own food and recently started making my own salves, antibiotics, and other homemade remedies.

I was blessed to have a mom who taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. She instilled a love for Jesus Christ in me that will never die. I owe her everything and I am eternally grateful for her.

Thanks to her guidance, I am the Manager and Vice President of a local bank where I have the distinct pleasure of serving the people of Macon County and beyond. I have been rated number one bank-wide in every job position that I have held at the bank for the past 29 years—spanning all the way back to my Macon Bank/Entegra days. Along with several other accolades, I was also selected as Macon County’s Choice for “Best Banker” by the Franklin Press.

I have worked alongside neighbors, family and friends to help raise awareness for notable causes and to help those in need. All of this led me to envision and create events like The Sweet Carolina Music Festival and 828 Treasure Quest which not only raises money for our local non-profits, but also promotes and creates tourism and development in our county.

I am a member of The Daybreak Rotary Club where I became a Paul Harris Fellow. I also recently won the “Free Dinner for a Year” at Riverwalk Grill (hahaha).

In all seriousness—I am truly blessed that God has given me a heart for others and the desire to live an intentional life. I want everything that I do to serve a purpose and garner meaning. I am thankful for every challenging endeavor that God lays before me. I am constantly envisioning what could be. I love strategically planning, networking and organizing ways to make things happen.

With that being said—if elected—you (my constituents) will become my purpose, and this county will be my vision. I will work diligently alongside others to move Macon County forward in a way that will make us sustainable and relevant, all while preserving the very essence of who we are. I will make sure that we operate with thoughtful intent—paving the way for our children, grandchildren and the many generations to come. I believe there is a delicate balance between honoring what is and striving for what could be, and that we must consciously toe that line.

I promise to represent every faction of our population, regardless of political affiliation, status, or creed. I will always keep your best interests—and the best interests of Macon County—at the forefront of every decision that I make. My commitment is to use my financial background and spiritual awareness to help usher in fiscal responsibility, accountability, integrity, and truth. I want nothing less than to do what is best for the people of Macon County.

I hope to usher in a new era for our board that fosters meaningful change that welcomes new ideas and helps to cultivate an atmosphere of respectful debate and thoughtful dialogue that will move our county forward.

I look forward to serving and getting to know you better.

May God richly bless you and yours!
Dylan Castle

Born to Jack and Doreen Castle, my family and I moved to Franklin, NC when I was in the 3rd grade. My parents recognized the importance of a Bible-based education and made the decision to homeschool myself and my older brother, Justin. Since both parents retired from the US Air Force, my homeschooling experience was held to a high standard. While I did not always enjoy it at the time, I recognize my elementary and high school education as a priceless treasure that built me into the man I am today.

After high school, I chose to attend Pensacola Christian College and studied Education, Physical Education, Youth Ministries, and Pastoral Ministries, earning a B.A. in 2016. Within weeks of graduating college, I began working as a full-time Youth Pastor at Victory Baptist and even taught in its Christian school.

After almost a decade of ministry in my childhood church, I felt God's call to begin a new ministry journey. For the past 5 years, I have been the pastor of a home fellowship that meets in houses in Macon and Jackson Counties. Now a bi-vocational pastor, I have found a variety of employment opportunities, from managing a print shop for a small business owner in Sylva, to working in the trades as a carpenter, to becoming self-employed. My wife (Christie) and I met in college, and have been married since 2017. We have a son, Sterling (3), a daughter Marcie (passed away the day after she was born, 2023), and a third child due in 2026.

My interest in politics began during my time as a high school teacher at Victory Christian. Because of my love for history in general, I was asked to teach US History. However, knowing the teaching I received from my own history classes would not be enough to teach my new students, I spent months of deep study preparing.

What began as a general appreciation for history, quickly morphed into an intense passion to share and teach the specifics of history. The next semester, I was asked to teach US Government, compelling me to once again spend months of deep study, on an even more specific topic.

Combining my love for the Founding Fathers from US History class, and the imperative to always stand for righteousness from my Bible classes, I taught US Government with a zeal and focus for how things were intended to be done, why they should be done that way, and how to properly realign things that had been shifted from their original design.

Armed with this new passion and knowledge base, I became eager to communicate these truths to more than just my students. The timing could not have been more perfect. People had just begun discussing the need for lockdowns in response to a new disease, Covid-19.

As people pleaded with government bodies of all sizes to make common sense decisions, I began to realize that my ability to speak publicly and communicate clearly was truly a gift from God, therefore, I was determined to use that gift for more than just the church house.

What began as a journey of reasoning with government boards about lockdowns, mandates, and policies has continued past the pandemic years into current hot topics of parental rights, child innocence, and traditional values. My message has remained the same: decisions made in the best interest of the people should not trample individual liberty, as long as leaders: 1) understand their Constitutional role, 2) temper their emotions, 3) stand with conviction, and 4) move with compassion.

I am running for County Commissioner first and foremost because I know that God has called me to this endeavor. I told God that I would bring Him with me anywhere I go, to do any task He set before me. I believe that God wants to be a part of our government, and is giving me this opportunity now, because He knows that I will take Him with me.

Secondly, I want to help my community. I am aware of many needs facing our county: housing, career jobs, family growth, and county services to name a few. While I have my own thoughts on how to address these, a commissioner does not work in a vacuum. He has to make decisions taking into account county government and employees, other commissioners, and most importantly, the citizens of Macon County.

Therefore, what I offer to the voters of Macon County is not just possible solutions, but more importantly, proven leadership, a willingness to listen and learn, care to find the best options possible, conviction to make hard choices, and above all the commitment to honor my oath before Almighty God to serve all citizens of Macon County.

As a pastor, I have learned first-hand that a leader must be a servant with a heart for people. As a patriot, I know the role of government is to protect our rights, not grant them. My goal once elected is to truly embody the term "public servant" and do my best for the people of Macon County.

David B. Culpepper
David was born in Franklin, NC in 1978 in Angel Community Hospital. After growing up in the Cullasaja community and attending Cullasaja Elementary, MMS and then FHS, David matriculated to WCU and graduated with a BS in Communications/Public relations.

Newly educated, but under motivated, David moved to South Florida to learn what one doesn’t often learn in a school, how to build and operate a business. After ten years of toiling in the heat, and about a dozen readings of “Cold Mountain,” David moved his budding family home where they could breathe, surrounded by mountains.

He is married to his wife of 17 years, Charlotte, and has two teenagers, Ledger and Daisy.

David owns and operates Culpepper’s Architectural Salvage in the Otto community. He travels extensively for his business sourcing interesting and unusual materials for distribution to dealers around the globe. Experiencing first hand how the world lives and interacts with their surroundings gives Culpepper a unique perspective on reality and a deeper appreciation of what we have and need to protect in our great country.

At any given time, Culpepper would rather be outside adventuring in our glorious mountains, a preference that is evident in his consistent advocacy for outdoor recreation opportunities. David takes this philosophy a step further and sees youth adventure activities as paramount to self-esteem, resilience, mental health and ultimately success in life.

When not climbing a mountain, or descending it via bike or skis, Culpepper enjoys paddling, surfing, scuba, caving, and reading. Some book recommendations include: “Thinking Fast and Slow”, “Sapiens” and “The Psychology of Money"

David served two terms on the Franklin Town Council.

He currently serves on the Macon County Recreation Committee and the Nantahala Bank Advisory Board.

He served previously on the board of the Blue Ridge Bartram Trail Conservency and asks that any donations toward his campaign be directed instead to the BRBTC where they will have a direct and tangible positive impact on Macon County.
Nick Lofthouse
My name is Nick Lofthouse and I am running for one of the two open seats for District 2 on the Board of Commissioners because I want to make sure Macon County remains a place where my children—and other families—can build a life worth living. With a career in public service, experience as a small business owner serving Western North Carolina, unique insight as a county employee, and a heart for volunteering to make our community better, I would be honored to represent you on the Board of Commissioners.

I grew up in the Echo Valley community on land owned by my grandparents, Phil and Maysel Hazazer. I was raised by my mother Kate, who as a single mother I credit for instilling in me a fierce work ethic that she demonstrated on a daily basis by working long hours as a lineman for Verizon and a dental hygienist. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to call many corners of Macon County home, living on the Eastside of town and attending East Franklin Elementary School before moving across town to Skeenah when my mother remarried where I finished out elementary school at Union Elementary. I am a proud product of Macon County Youth Sports, plating soccer, football, and baseball in the county rec leagues and spent my summers at the community building for summer adventure camp. I attended Franklin High School and was proud to represent the Panthers as a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, a member of the Football Team and as a Wrestler. I have always has a love for finding out how things are engineered to work, which lead to me attended college in Florida where I completed technical training in electronics and earned my journeyman certification. I returned home to work in communications technology, including positions as a repair technician and later with a local two-way radio communications company.

I have always believed that you do not have the right to complain about a problem, if you are not willing to put in work to find a solution, so after watching so many friends and family members struggle with addiction and go down paths of self-destruction, I made the decision to pursue a career in law enforcement as a way to try to make a difference in my community. I put myself through Basic Law Enforcement Training at Southwestern Community College and was fortunate to be hired by Sheriff Robert Holland after graduation to work in the detention center. While working part-time for the Sheriff’s Office, I founded my first small business specializing in radio installation and repair, which later grew and was acquired by a larger company, where I worked full-time as a service manager overseeing operations, budgeting, and forecasting.

One my contract with the radio company was up, Sheriff Holland offered me a full-time position at the Sheriff’s Office working on patrol where I have worked ever since. Working my way up from deputy, to K9 handler, to sergeant, to lieutenant to now serving as the Captain of Crime Prevention which comes with the responsibility of the day-to-day operations such as community outreach and education as well as maintaining the unit’s budget and ensuring we are being good stewards of taxpayer dollars.

I believe education and training is a commitment and not an end goal, which is why as Captain of Crime Prevention, I have prioritized setting up pathways for sheriff’s office employees to further their education through a partnership with Southwestern Community College. Aside from the various certifications and trainings I have completed in law enforcement, I am currently enrolled in SCC to complete my criminal justice degree. I believe that you should always try to better yourself and learn as much as you can.

I am married to my wife, Brittney, and together we own Public Safety Services, a vehicle upfitting service with customers spanning across Western North Carolina and Northern Georgia. Our children — Kyler, Sawyer, and Turner — all attend Macon County Schools and participate in local sports and activities, which despite not being the most qualified, I enjoy volunteering as a coach. I enjoy all things community, whether that be helping with fundraisers to support organizations such as Reach of Macon County or KIDS Place or volunteering to play the Grinch throughout the holiday season, our family is committed to serving the incredible community we call home in whatever ways we are called to do so.

Danny Reitmeier
Danny Reitmeier
I was raised in Franklin with my sister, Beth Corbin and our brother, Chris by our 2 parents. I was a student athlete and very involved in student government all through my school years. I graduated from Franklin High school, joined the Air Force and served for 8.5 years. I am a proud combat Veteran, having served in a Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm. I am married to my wife, Kim and we have a wonderful family. We are very proud parents and grandparents. I am a born again Christian, saved by the blood of Jesus. I am a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church, where I have attended for 32 years. I have been a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir, helped with our church youth group, and been a part of our men’s prayer breakfast. I have been involved in our community through many activities, with an emphasis in youth and adult sports. I am also part of a group of men that are great friends and we work throughout the year helping others in our county.

My reason for running for County Commissioner is simple….I love our county and the people that live here and want to serve them in the best way possible. I am a “people person”….I’ve never met a stranger. I truly care about people. I believe those character traits will help me connect with the citizens in our county and earn the trust necessary to move our county forward. In taking care of an entire county, there are many areas to address. Some of the main ones are providing the necessary services for everyone, supporting our law enforcement and emergency services, being wise and diligent with our tax dollars, and supporting our school system, especially the students themselves. Our county deserves someone to truly listen to them, be transparent and speak on their behalf. I would be that voice.
